Saarthi: Gender-sensitive training for safer public transport
Saarthi focused on the people who shape a woman's daily journey: traffic police, auto drivers, bus drivers and conductors. Interactive workshops made harassment and responsibility practical topics, using talks, visuals, games, street plays and open questions.
- Public and school transport staff
- Interactive gender-sensitisation workshops
- A link between safer journeys and school outreach
The challenge
Harassment during journeys can restrict women’s freedom of movement. Saarthi focused on the everyday transport workforce as one part of a safer commuting environment.
The response
The Prakoshth worked with traffic police, auto drivers, city bus drivers and conductors, and school bus staff with NGO support. Gender-sensitisation workshops used talks and visual material, games, street plays and questions to discuss conduct and responsibility.
Link to other programmes
Through its connection with Ru-ba-ru, Saarthi extended gender-sensitisation to drivers and conductors of school buses and vans. This joined conversations inside schools to the journeys students made each day.
