Jagriti: Public advocacy linked to a local response to harassment
Jagriti connected public attention to a place where women could seek help. Launched with actor Sushant Singh and Breakthrough India on 18 August 2015, the campaign began at Lucknow's Charbagh bus station, where a Mahila Help Desk channelled complaints to local police.
- Public figures and NGO partnership
- A help desk at a busy transport hub
- Prakoshth monitoring and local police follow-up
The challenge
Harassment in public spaces limits women’s ability to move freely. Jagriti brought public attention and local response mechanisms to this issue.
The response
On 18 August 2015, actor and presenter Sushant Singh launched the Prakoshth campaign in collaboration with Breakthrough India. The first site was Charbagh bus station in Lucknow, where a Mahila Help Desk was set up. The Prakoshth monitored the desk and forwarded complaints to the relevant local police station.
From awareness to response
The help desk gave the campaign an operating link to local police: the Prakoshth monitored it and forwarded complaints to the relevant station. Further campaigns with public figures, NGOs and media were part of the programme’s plans.
